Western Power Distribution engineers restored supplies to 587 homes in 90 minutes

There was power cut in the “Lower Penarth” area tonight – affecting supplies in many streets in Lower Penarth including Lavernock Road, Westbourne Road, and Forrest Road .

A total of 587 homes were affected . Power was lost owing to an 11kva cable fault at 21:30. At first the electricity utility Western Power Distribution had said it hoped to restore supplies by just after midnight – but in fact the engineers restored supplies before  23:00.

It’s the third major power “outage” in the town within a month. The last power loss  was on December 27th . Tomorrow morning engineers will be back on the scene digging up roads in the area to rectify the latest fault.

There have been theories that some of the underground power cables may be very old – some possibly a relic of the Penarth’s original power utility ,The Penarth Electric Light Company Ltd which was founded in 1898.
