A range of clothing and fashion accessories bearing an “alternative” Penarth crest is being now marketed around the world by an American multinational firm.
CafePress Incorporated – which describes itself as “the recognized pioneer of customizable retail products”, sells – internationally – everything from Penarth T-Shirts to Penarth tote-bags and… perhaps an appropriate gift for St Valentine’s Day – even a “Penarth family thong“. (£10:50 – but check the chart to make sure the size is right).
The impressive “Penarth” crest on this and several other CafePress products however isn’t the town’s famous official “Three Bears” crest originally designed 1875 for the Penarth Local Board of Health (the fore-runner of the Town Council ) .
The rival mediaeval-style design was created in 2008 and controversially-entitled “Penarth (of Cardiff)” by another US company called Joy Empire Inc. who must have had wind of the forthcoming merger with Cardiff.
Penarth Town Council has council has previously objected to the marketing of products bearing a “re-worked” version of the town crest (See PDN http://tinyurl.com/j3xasxp – ) and forced suppliers to abandon such plans.
In this case however the word Penarth is being interpreted by CafePress as a “family name” as opposed to the name of a town which presumably gets around objections and entitles the company to use the “alternative” crest and the name.
…And if a “Penarth” thong is perhaps too personal, then there are Penarth boxer-shorts, aprons and even beer-steins available.
