Penarth’s Conservative Assembly Member Andrew R T Davies –  who is Leader of the Conservative Party in the Welsh Assembly –  has announced that he’s decided to back the campaigns to get Britain out of the European Union.

Carwyn Jones claimed that Labour - which has been in power for 17 years - has the energy to carry on for another five years and beyond .

Carwyn Jones claimed that Labour – which has been in power for 17 years – “has the energy” to carry on for another five years and beyond .

Over the weekend at Llandudno, the Welsh Labour Party Leader Carwyn Jones had already confirmed – yet again – that he is supporting continued UK memberhip of the E.U.  – notwithstanding some diffidence by UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Jones, who’s First Minister in Welsh Labour Government has already said that May 5th’s  Welsh Assembly elections are a “straight fight” between him and Davies.

Now, with Andrew R T Davies’s decision to back the E.U. OUT campaign,  it means the pair are also in opposite corners of the ring on Europe – as well as in a head-to-head battle to form the next Welsh Government .

In a statement issued last night Andrew RT Davies, (Conservative South Wales Central)   said: “In June voters will have a say on Britain’s future in the European Union, for the first time in more than a generation. Thanks to the Conservatives, the future of our relationship with Europe will then be placed in the hands of the people – not politicians.

“After a great deal of consideration I have decided that I will be voting for Britain to leave the EU. It is my belief that our future will be best served as part of a looser, economic relationship with the European Union.

“There will be almost 7 weeks for Welsh politicians to articulate their positions on the European question, but before a ballot has been cast in the referendum Welsh voters face an even bigger question. We are a little over 70 days away from the most important Welsh Assembly election in a generation and the Welsh Conservatives will not be distracted from articulating our positive vision of real change for our NHS, Education and Economy.

“As the UK surges forward, Wales risks being left behind. We simply cannot afford to give Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party 5 more years to make the same mistakes all over again.”

While I’m not a huge fan of the doctor who writer, carwyn does look tired and bored with his job. Maybe they should swap and we could have a few episodes which are real sifi.

  2. AK says:

Why are we still going the expense of the May WAG elections, when any policy pledges bay be blown apart by the June referendum result ?

Surely the WAG election needs to be delayed – and if someone says it is needed by law, then the legislators need to get their collective fingers out and amend the law

  3. Christopher David says:

Well well I concur AK. If the WAG elections aren’t delayed then the baying (pun intended) should continue. The Euro debate is far and away more important and as AK says may make the WG elections superfluous.
