Penarth Coastguard station off Cliff Walk where officers are coordinating today’s major exercise

Thick fog has hampered the start of a major flood response exercise in Cardiff Bay today.

The exercise – being coordinated by Penarth Coastguard and the other emergency services – is called “Exercise Polygon” and is taking place on the Eastern side of the Bay   – near the Dr Who Exhibition Centre, where an exclusion area has been set up.

The operation will continue all day until 16:30 this afternoon and the exclusion zone is being marked by a line of yellow buoys .

A safety vessel is patrolling the exclusion zone and all mariners are being asked to keep clear of the area and navigate at a slow speed to minimise wash

The Royal Marines are also carrying out a simultaneous training exercise in Cardiff Bay today .

    Looking at twitter and facebook it looks more like South Wales Fire and Rescue are co-ordinating it using HM Coastguard, RNLI, Ambulance and other agencies as assets.

    It was a lovely day today didn’t rain at all. Maybe they should practice in January, big girls blouses!!
