The vintage excursion ship M.V. “Balmoral” has been awarded the title of UK National Flagship of the Year by National Historic Ships UK .
Martyn Heighton, Director of National Historic Ships says the award has gone to MV Balmoral for what he called “her outstanding and extensive UK programme. “
Mr Heighton says “The recently-formed MV Balmoral Fund Ltd submitted an extensive and very well presented public UK-wide coastal cruising programme ranging from Scotland, through North Wales and the Bristol Channel and the South coast, round to London.”
Balmoral will now receive a cash prize of £500 for investment in the vessel and a special Flagship Broad Pennant to fly at her masthead.
The award is made to the ship which si judged to offer the best “seasonal programmes which engage with the public through festivals, demonstrations, offering on-board cruises, quayside visits, educational programmes, participation in races and similar activities.”
Apart from fulfilling her annual excursion schedules MV Balmoral will now become a flagship and floating ambassador for National Historic Ships UK .
National Historic Ships UK advises the Department of Culture, Media & Sport and a range of grant giving organisations on priorities for ship conservation and is the official voice for historic vessels in the UK. It maintains the National Register of Historic Vessels, which lists over 1,000 significant historic vessels – including, of course, Balmoral.
