Well-known local yachtsman Geoff Titterton- who set sail from Penarth Marina in the early 90s in his yacht Eclipse of Penarth – has now published a book about his adventures afloat over the last quarter of a century.
For most of his career Geoff had been a highly-regarded BBC Wales studio cameraman and lighting director but, almost 30 years ago, did what many men only dream about – completely changed his life and set sail from Penarth to explore the world.
In the new book Geoff describes how in 1987, after his two children had grown up, his first marriage had failed – and rather than just moving out and buying a flat, Geoff made a much more dramatic change, and bought a 43 yacht – “Eclipse” which he lived aboard in the then-new Penarth Marina.
He met Evey – his Dutch wife who was completely unfazed by sailing, by handling the boat in all weathers and was quite happy to cook a full Sunday roast with all the trimmings aboard “Eclipse” even when the yacht was heeled hard-over and contesting weekend races in the choppy Bristol Channel.
Geoff ‘s skill at the helm of what is a dauntingly large boat, proved crucial in the rescue of an injured yachtsman who’d fallen overboard from another vessel during a race off Penarth. He and Evey manoeuvred their big vessel alongside the casualty, lifted him safely on board Eclipse and brought him back to Penarth Marina where he hoisted into the dock by firemen and taken into the care of a waiting ambulance crew.
A year after Geoff and Evey married, the day came when they decided to take an even more adventurous step. After 30 years with the BBC, Geoff took early retirement and the couple cast-off from Penarth Marina , turned right, and sailed down channel into the sunset – destination, the rest of the world.
Now Geoff has set his recollections of their life afloat in his book “Our Nine Year Honeymoon” recounting their many voyages , around the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic and to the Caribbean in the form of a day-log. It also includes many photographs of their exotic adventures.
The book is published by AuthorHouse UK.
