Penarth Councillors have been told that thieves have stripped lead from the roofs of two schools in the town
The revelation was made by Cllr Rhiannon Birch (Labour Cornerswell) in this week’s full council meeting in which she reported that she had just come from a meeting of Cogan School Governors.
Cllr Birch said that over the Easter Holiday lead had been taken from one of the roofs of the school leaving the building vulnerable to water damage. The building contained all next year’s exercise books.
She told councillors that the cost of repairs – which had only just been completed – had amounted to over £5,500.
The situiation is so serious that Cogan Primary School has resorted to Twitter to alert all local people living near the school to keep a look out for lead thieves.
Cllr Birch said she also understood that lead had been also been stolen from the roofs of Stanwell School over the holidays.
She said she had also heard that another school in Cardiff had also been stripped of lead and had been unable to reopen after the holidays.
