Cllr Stuart Egan has been formally elected  as the new Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan by Vale councillors – succeeding gaffe-prone Cllr Fred Johnson. [See http://tinyurl.com/nbq98ue%5D

Cllr Egan (Labour Buttrills Ward Barry) is the current Deputy Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council and is also the ‘cabinet’ member for Adult Services.

Cllr Eddie Williams (Llantwit First) whose tiny party keeps Labour in power has been made Deputy Mayor

The new Deputy Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan is to be Cllr Eddie Williams (Llantwit First Independents Llantwit Major Ward ). The  Llantwit First Independents Party formed a coalition with Labour in 2012 which keeps the Labour Party in power in the Vale of Glamorgan.

When the pair were originally nominated for their respective roles  as Mayor and Deputy Mayor there was criticism from Cllr Richard Bertin (Independent, Court Ward Barry ) who refused to support the nominations .

Cllr Richard Bertin (Independent) has been "censured"

Cllr Richard Bertin (Independent)

Cllr Bertin had said the role of Mayor in the Vale of Glamorgan was  ” no longer cost effective when you consider it costs around £65,000 per year to keep them in office just to raise around £13,000 for charity per year. “

Cllr Bertin went on to say “The mayoral role is merely ceremonial and, if you ask me, old-fashioned. The Leader of the council could pick up most of the work including visits and opening new venues etc. One must now ask do we now really need a Mayor in 2016?”

The Vale Council  has also nominated the members of its so-called ‘cabinet’ who will be its so-called “champions”:-

  •         Anti-Poverty Champion – Cllr Neil Moore (Leader)
  •         Armed Forces’ Champion – Councillor A.G. Powell
  •         Biodiversity Champion – Cabinet Member for Visible, Leisure and Regulatory Services
  •         Carers’ Champion – Cabinet Member for Housing and Social Care and Health
  •         Diversity Champion – Cllr Neil Moore (Leader)
  •         Equalities Champion – Cllr Neil Moore (Leader)
  •         Older People’s Champion – Councillor S.C. Egan
  •         Safeguarding Champion – Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education
  •         Superfast Broadband Champion – Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Education
  •         Domestic Violence Champion – Cabinet Member for Housing and Social Care and Health

“Cllr Bertin had said the role of Mayor in the Vale of Glamorgan was ” no longer cost effective when you consider it costs around £65,000 per year to keep them in office just to raise around £13,000 for charity per year”. First glance I thought it said Butlins ward. Now I’ve read this I realise its a typo and I was correct. Another nonsense by the dreamers in the “cabinet” hah.

  2. Kevin Mahoney says:

It actually costs over £100,000 pa to run the mayors office. again I was the only one to vote against Egan’s appointment and the rest of the Independent group abstained.

The rest of the council plus general hangers on departed after the meeting for the free nosh up except those of us in the Independent group who boycott such events. All such freebies of course are paid for by all those reading this article who reside in the Vale.

i am rather intrigued by the vast amount of designated ‘champions’ we have, especially the ‘Superfast broadband champion’

Does anybody else get the impression that a bunch of idiots are sitting around thinking up new ludicrous ‘Champion’ titles to confer on people?

  3. johnm says:

Champions might be a good idea, as long as the person acting in that capacity are fully aware of the issues. My eye also caught the ‘superfast broadband champion’ slot!
I assume that the champions aren’t being remunerated!

  4. Christopher David says:

Is “superfast broadband champion” a new type of underpants? Hey I’ll have to dump (pun) me Celvin Klimes (sic) . Mr Mahoney I think as usual you’ve brought it all into context. Free nosh- probably vino, a nice bit of Mayor bling and a puffed up “well in my capacity of XXX in the “cabinet” chomp chomp whilst peering leeringly over specs…… 19 century painting anyone.
