A survey by the My Society organisation, which checks how responsive MPs are to letters from their constituents, says that the rating for Stephen Doughty  – the Labour MP for Cardiff South and Penarth – is worse now than it was last year .

My Society’s offshoot “WriteToThem” sent a total of  90,175 messages to MPs in the year 2015/6 to see how they dealt with them. In addition a sample of  50,852 people answered My Society  “feedback survey” about the quality of their MP’s response.

Penarth Labour MP Stephen Doughty replied to only 29 of 74 items of correspondence

Doughty’s performance in 2014/15 had been rated as “low”  . His response rate then was – according to My Society – only 40% , meaning that only two out of every five pieces of correspondence were answered.

In 2015/16 however his response rate (based on 130 communications sent to him and 74 survey respondents who said whether or not he replied)  dropped by a full percentage point to only 39%. Doughty replied to only 29 of the  74 survey respondents who returned data to MySociety . In the new 2015/16 league ratings of MPs, Doughty comes in at only a lowly 440th place.

In first place in the league is MP Jason McCartney (Conservative Colne Valley) who replied to  96% of his correspondence

  1. Martin Coffee says:

I went to his surgery in Penarth some months ago. I’ve not heard a dickie bird back from him. The sooner he is voted out the better.

  2. Rich says:

He’s just there for the money and free meals …

  3. Timothy Hughes says:

Good to see the Welsh Assembly coming out top of the UK’s elected bodies but not sure that the House of Lords, which came out bottom, should really count as elected.

  4. Modom says:

For the first time in my life I decided to write to my MP, now I see I have wasted the paper and stamp. (I know swetly old fashioned, but I had hoped that snail mail might have a better chance.)
    We’ll see…..

  5. Modom says:

    Sorry, sweetly….

  6. Jane Foster says:

Not many pens in that pot, are there…

  7. Timothy Hughes says:

I would never want to be pedantic but to go from 21 out of 53 to 29 out of 74 is a drop of 0.43% which should never really be described as “dropped by a full percentage point”. That said I don’t really consider this as a measure of “quality”, more “quantity” perhaps.

  8. Bobchocks says:

He’s the MP for Cardiff South (Bay) and Penarth who didn’t bother coming to the Official Opening of the 5th Assembly last week. How rude.

  9. Barry Shaw says:

It’s simple! When you’re in a safe Labour seat, why bother! You can see his point can’t you?

  10. Taffy says:

You’re right Barry. He was also parachuted to the short list when selected. Kept good quality female candidates without a chance.
