Superyachts like “Jamaica Bay” may be a familiar sight in the Mediterranean – but less so in the Bristol Channel.
This 1,143 ton yacht, which caught the attention of strollers on Penarth Pier and Esplanade this morning, is 59.5 metres long , 11.92 metres wide and left Falmouth yesterday for the voyage to Cardiff . [In case we’re out of the EU tomorrow, that’s the equivalent of 195 feet long with a beam of 39 feet]
The yacht – which bears the Marshall Islands flag and is registered in the Pacific atoll of Bikini – is here as part of a preview of the forthcoming August Bank Holiday weekend’s P1 powerboat racing event to be held in Cardiff Bay on August 28th and 29th 2016.
The P1 “Superstock” series has the same standardised machinery and hulls for all competitors which means that winning – or losing – is entirely down to the skills of the driver and navigator
The racing will take place on Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday and the Cardiff event is one of five race weekends held around Britain .Winners of each Race will be awarded a medal . Podium finishers for the round will receive a trophy and prize money.
