To avoid his pursuers, Gethin – Cardiff Crown Court was told –  had turned his headlights off and had reached speeds of up to 65 mph in the built-up area as he  drove through red lights, across junctions and at times on the wrong side of the road.

In the end police had to use a stinger device to puncture his tyres and bring him to a stop. Gething had then run away but was found hiding under another vehicle.

The court heard there had been an argument with his girlfriend and Gethin was planning to sleep in his car after leaving her flat, but had not intended to drive it.

Gethin pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drink-driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance and was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment and disqualified from driving.
