Penarth helmswoman Hannah Mills and her crewmate Saskia Clark have finally secured their Olympic Gold Medal in the 470 dinghy sailing class.

Hannah learned to sail competitively at Penarth’s second-oldest yacht club – the Penarth Motor Boat and Sailing Club (later re-named as the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club).

The final race of the Olympic 470 regatta had been postponed because of light winds yesterday – but today it was all systems go and Hannah and Saskia finally clinched the gold medals they could have lost if they hadn’t finished today’s raceΒ  – the last in the regatta.

The two just needed to finish today’s race to win gold – so they played it carefully and came in a creditable 8th . Good enough to get them both on the top-tier of the rostrum at the later medal ceremony

  2. Jan Harding says:

Very well done ladies. Yes hope we get a gold post box in the town centre πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

  3. Michael says:

A great achievement. Well done girls.

I’m confused though. Why would penarth get a gold post box when she’s from Dinas powys and learned to sail in Cardiff?

  4. rodtharrod says:

Excuse me…where do you come off trying to claim Hannah is from Penarth? Hannah is Dinas Powis through and through.

  5. Andrew Worsley says:

Id say she was Welsh , I could be wrong ??? but due to the claims being made im pretty sure of it . Get over the petty ‘ she belongs to us ‘ debate , very petty and childish . I suppose this young woman entered the Olympics under the flag of Dinas Powys or was it the flag of St Andrews Major ? or possibly Penarth ? . As for the gold post box , of course you mean a gold painted one, I have seen some of the gold painted stuff in London , and it looks like someone was let loose with a tin of gold paint and some of it looks awful , though it may well be the reverse the word ‘tacky’ came to mind in some instances.
