The discovery of an empty kayak floating down the Ely River after midnight last night prompted a full-scale search and rescue operation by South Wales Fire and Rescue, Penarth coastguard and South Wales Police in the vicinity of Cardiff Marine Village.
The South Wales Fire and Rescue Penarth Fire-boat was launched from the Barrage Locks and was tasked to search the banks of the Ely whilst police dog handlers carried out a search from the land.
A police dog ,accompanied by a police dog-handler was also ferried to an inaccessible part of the river bank by the fire boat.
At 03:04 am the dog located the “canoeist” who – it’s understood – had allegedly been paddling a kayak that didn’t belong to him, upstream towards Ely.
He was arrested and taken into custody near Cardiff Marine Village – the marine dealership and boat-park compound which lies upstream from Penarth Road bridge . The kayak was also safely recovered.
