CIVIC LEADERS FROM ACROSS THE VALE ATTEND MERCHANT NAVY CEREMONY

The Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council Cllr Neil Moore led the laying of wreaths at the Vale of Glamorgan Merchant Navy Memorial in Barry today. Penarth Town Council was not represented

The Merchant Navy Association , the British Legion and civic leaders  today attended the annual ceremony commemorating the sacrifice made by seamen from all parts of the Vale of Glamorgan in two World Wars.

A simple service and wreath-laying was held at the Merchant Navy Memorial in the forecourt of the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Civic Offices in Barry .

The memorial – as 23 foot high monument in Portland Stone –  was created in 1996 to commemorate the merchant seamen of the Vale of Glamorgan who died in the First and Second World Wars and bears plaques commemorating their names.

PDN has compiled the following lists of merchant seamen from Penarth who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars  derived from existing published lists – but the WW2 list is understood to be incomplete.

FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-18

DAVISON, Ernest. Assistant Steward, SS Anglo Californian (London). Died 4/7/15 age 18. Born Penarth. Ship damaged by gunfire from submarine off southern Ireland. Tower Hill Memorial.

DENMAN, Ernest Francis. Third Mate, SS Narragansett (Greenock). Died 16/3/17 age 23. Born Penarth. Ship sunk SW of Ireland. Tower Hill Memorial.

GAMBLING, William Robert. Assistant Cook, SS Bulgarian (Glasgow). Died 20/1/17 age 18. Born Penarth. Ship sunk west of the Fastnet. Tower Hill Memorial.

HOLLOCOMBE, William. First Engineer, SS Duchess of Cornwall (Falmouth). Died 11/4/17 age 47. Husband of Mary Hollocombe of Stanwell Rd., Penarth. Ship sunk north of Cape Barfleur. Tower Hill Memorial.

LYE, John Benjamin. Steward, SS Peerless (Newcastle). Died 20/9/17 age 32. Born Cogan, Penarth. Ship sunk SW of Bishop Rock. Tower Hill Memorial

There was no representative from Penarth Town Council at today’s ceremony but the council has said it will be flying the Red Ensign from its flagstaffs in West House, Stanwell Road, in recognition of Merchant Navy Day tomorrow Saturday September 3rd.
