Anyone living near Penarth Athletic Field can now be in no doubt that summer’s over with the annual re-appearance on the skyline of that harbinger of autumn – the rugby floodlights.

With the nights drawing in, Penarth Rugby Club volunteers have this week been re-erecting their  three  massive 16-metre-high floodlights ready to illuminate the field for training and for winter fixtures.

As the Athletic Field is a resource shared by both Penarth Rugby Club and Penarth Cricket Clubs, the floodlight masts on the lower side of the main rugby pitch are taken down each spring with the aid of an ingenious hand-pumped hydraulic system, dismantled and stored during the cricket season .

Now the floodlights are  back in situ – ready to spotlight whatever the coming season may bring as the action unfolds under veteran chairman Mike Gooding.
