Penarth Rowing Club had ideal conditions and calm sea for its annual regatta held off Penarth Esplanade this weekend.
The schedule for races slipped somewhat because of priority lifeboat rescue activity on the shared slipway and was slightly hampered by a shortage of boats but in the end the schedule was completed – with competitors and spectators all enjoying a day of excellent racing.
Taking part were teams from Llandaff Rowing Club, Monmouth Rowing Club, Monmouth School Rowing Club, the City of Cardiff Rowing Club , Wallingford Rowing Club , Swansea Rowing Club and, of course, Penarth Rowing Club – the hosts.
The fact that the teams were sharing boats in rotation – and weren’t necessarily all wearing identifiable club kit – made it a challenge for some spectators to work out who was who, but once a winning boat crossed the line to the sound of the club klaxon the delighted reaction of the supporters made it clear who the respective victors were .
Penarth Rowing Club now has a facility at Barry Docks and is adding additional boats to its existing fleet – but this weekend’s event still managed to retain something of the flavour of the original Penarth Regatta held when the club – one of the oldest in the country – was first founded in 1880.
