Penarth Coastguards, police and an NHS ambulance crew were called to Penarth Esplanade in the early hours of this morning following an emergency involving a middle aged man.

At around 03:30 an ambulance drove down onto the Northern Slipway near Penarth Pier and rendered emergency medical aid to the casualty.

The injured man had fallen 20 feet onto the shore

Penarth Coastguard say the man had been trying to gain access to the pier but had slipped off the sea wall and fallen some 20 feet to the beach beneath.

The casualty sustained back injuries and is now being treated in hospital.
