Slow Ahead: Balmoral’s propellors begin to power her away from the pier tonight as she toots her horn and bids goodbye to Penarth. The pier mooring crew wave farewell …until next year

With the customary valedictory toot on her ship’s horn, tonight M.V. Balmoral has bidden farewell to Penarth and brought down the curtain on her 2016 summer season.

The final day of her sailing schedule was about as perfect as could have been possible; clear blue skies, warm temperatures, calm seas and sun throughout the day – making it a day to remember for anyone lucky enough to have been aboard her.

The little excursion ship had yesterday nobly powered her way from Penarth to Ilfracombe and back in the teeth of some rough seas and intermittent rain – but today’s brilliant weather provided Balmoral with some of the best sailing conditions of a somewhat variable year . Quite how the season has worked out financially remains to be seen.

After dropping her last passengers at Clevedon Balmoral was heading for Avonmouth and a well-earned winter re-fit.

Balmoral left Penarth at 18:30 tonight with a complement of passengers bound for Clevedon – after which she’ll be heading back to Avonmouth for a rest and a refit – ready for next year.

How lovely, I think I heard this sound. Thank you so much for putting it on here. Hope they’ve made money this year and glad the weather was good for the last sail of the season, though your lovely report has made me sad, thinking of another summer gone and the Balmoral tooting a mournful farewell.
