It could have been a meteor,  it could have been just a firework, but some sort of burning object appeared to have been caught on a mobile phone by artist Mark James coming down in the sea off Penarth Pier last night .

The “unidentified object” appeared to streak at speed downwards towards the sea at an angle  leaving a smoke-trail in its wake – but , curiously, leaving no splash in the sea.

The burning object didn't follow a parabolic curve down to the sea - but descended at speed in a straight line leaving a smoke trail

Mark James, who “spotted” the object as it “came down”  said on Twitter he thought initially it was a flare but “it looked “like a meteor though.. weird. Scared the shit out of me”.

Now it’s all been revealed as a hoax. The ‘meteor’ was in fact part of artist Mark’s work for the Cardiff Contemporary Visual Art festival.

Mark James - who captured video of the mystery object - later posted a message on Twitter asking if anyone else had had seen what he saw?

    • Hamish Munnypenny says:

      It’s a hoax.

      • sjleworthy says:

        hense my request🙂

working in the graphics field myself its oh too easy to product this kind of thing with a more than convincing level of realism.

      • Hamish Munnypenny says:

It wasn’t convincing in the least. He has clearly never seen a meteor in real life. The camera bounces around for a while before being steadied and focussed on the central part of the pier. So already, I wondered what was so interesting about that particular framing. Then, from out of the clouds comes a slow motion light, flaring along the way.
A real meteor, or shooting star, would have taken milliseconds to travel the same distance. I was not fooled for a moment. It is clunky, like the special effects from a 70s disaster movie.

  2. Mgg says:

And in the sea off Penarth came the droids. Striding on their tripod legs they advanced destroying all in their path. Looking at beach hill they said ” sod that lets turn left to barry” and so it was that Barry was raized to the ground and all Penarth council tax actually stayed in Penarth. Hip hip hooray they cheered in the loud and chatter filled cafes hip hip hooray they cheered sat in their illegally parked cars pity they didn’t destroy tescos then we might be able to park there said mgg

What happened to the droids you say ….. they got a pay rise at the vog council

  3. whatsoccurin says:

The News sites are saying the Orionid meteor shower may be visible over UK this week and will involve lots of meteors flying through the atmosphere as they burn up-may be to do with that.

  4. Edmond Halley says:

  5. Woowoo Wizzywoo says:

Anyone who has ever seen a real meteor knows that there is not enough time to lift and point a camera. This is a spoof.

  6. Danny Oakentrode says:

Nice try! It was moving much too slowly to be a genuine meteor or “fireball”.

  7. Mgg says:

Ah shucks no Barry destroying aliens then

  8. Andrew Worsley says:

I think its most likely part of some film sequence I hope its the old Outer Limits from the 1960s era , sort of like something lost in time. I used to love some of the titles they gave some Outer Limits episodes such as . “The Man Who Was Not Yet Born”, or “Behold Eck!” and the list goes on , I expect they will be making some film after all they film Dr Who in this area , or some of it , the reason they choose Penarth is because if anything goes awry during filming there will be no off- camera laughter due to the towns reputation , of being bereft of a sense of humour. So there we are mystery solved.

    • whatsoccurin says:
