Olympic champion sailor Hannah Mills launched a new-boat appeal at Penarth Lifeboat Station earlier this year .

Local Olympic Gold medallist Hannah Mills  and her sailing partner Weymouth-based Saskia Clark have won the women’s World Sailor of the Year award.

fullscreen-capture-09112016-071027-bmpHannah – who did much of her early sailing off Penarth and comes from Dinas Powys – won silver medals in the London 2012 Olympics and Gold in the Olympic Women’s 470 class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  – and was honoured at an awards ceremony in Barcelona on last night .

The Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards are the result of a public vote – and are considered the most prestigious award in sailing. The winners were announced by King Constantine II of Greece, World Sailing’s President of Honour.

Hannah and Saskia received a marble and silver trophy depicting the globe, which is crowned with five silver spinnakers representing the continents.

…And the world’s new top female sailor also received a Rolex watch.
