Penarth Pier – which only comparatively recently had all its planking renewed – is about to undergo another major maintenance operation.
All the planking is now to be stripped off – section by section- so that the trusses beneath , which support the boardwalk, can be renewed,
Every winter Penarth Pier – which in 2014 won the title “Pier of the Year ” – receives a severe pasting from heavy seas and high tides, The latest maintenance is regarded as being essential to ensure the structure is sound and safe.
The pier will remain open to visitors during the operation – but there will be some parts of the decking which will be fenced off and out of bounds to the public.
There is quite a lot of remedial work to do underneath the pier’a main promenade deck .
Not only do the trusses require replacement – but some of the sewer pipework servicing the toilets and kiosks is is still temporarily suspended by webbing straps underneath the pier – some of which are working lose
A temporary workbase comprising two large shipping containers has been set up on the Esplanade and the work will be getting under way over the next few days
