Even though Penarth Pier doesn’t move about much – not even in the worst weather – local fishermen are apparently having trouble staying on their feet – especially in damp and foggy mornings.
It’s not that the anglers ending up on their backsides have been over-imbibing – they haven’t . Fishing, after all, is far too serious a pursuit to be mixed with alcohol.
…And there’s yet to be any really cold weather in Penarth this winter – which in the past has laid a surface of frost on the boardwalk and forced the pier to close.
Nevertheless the fishermen are now finding that when they reach the end of Penarth Pier they’re all having the tread extra-carefully and watch their step.
The reason? It seems that some of the planking at the far end of the pier appears to have become coated with a kind of pale-green algae which – in moist weather – turns into a treacherous slime that’s so slippery that it can suddenly – without warning – whip an angler’s wellies out from under him in the twinkling of an eye.
A number of fishermen are reported to have lost their footing so far, and in some cases – even worse – have also lost that prize-winning catch they were just about to land.
….But at least there’s now a new excuse for “the one that got away”.
