St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School is on Sully Road, Penarth

Six  schools in Penarth are now rated in  Welsh Government’s colour coded comparative ratings – meaning that they are judged to be “Highly Effective” category.

The new addition to the Green group is St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School which wins promotion to the 2017 top group.

What the colour coded categories actually mean is given in the boxes on the right.

  • Stanwell Secondary School: Green
  • St Joseph’s RC Primary: Green


  • Fairfield Primary School Yellow
  • Ysgol Pen-y-Garth Yellow 
  • St Cyres Secondary School

St Cyres – now housed in a the new £48,000,000 Penarth Learning Centre continues to be placed in the yellow rating in spite of an improved performance in the GCSE examinations last summer and the summer before that.

The last 12 months has seen the Welsh Labour Government’s Education Minister Huw Lewis  – a former teacher who had an undistinguished spell at the controls of education in Wales –  quit and be   replaced by LibDem AM Kirsty Williams .
