Mr Churchill – who was 81 – died on Wednesday January 11th at his home  following a short illness .

So many attended the funeral that the Baptist Church was packed with very many mourners having to stand. A number had to wait outside in the rain – but were determined to pay tribute in person to a much respected local figure .

The funeral was followed by a crematorium service at Cardiff and Glamorgan Memorial Park,  Barry and finally with a wake at the  Old Penarthians RFC clubhouse.

Mr Churchill had been a member of the Old Pens for over 60 years and had played a pivotal role in developing the club to its current status .

He was a former player, 1st XV captain and honorary secretary  – and was a well-known figure throughout the  rugby community of South Wales – not least for his expert rugby commentaries.

One Response to HUNDREDS PAY THEIR RESPECTS TO OLD PENS’ PRESIDENT ROY CHURCHILL

  1. cllr clive williams MBE says:

I was in school with Roy 70 years ago and our paths crossed with Rugby and working together on the building extensions and other issues on the Penarth Old Boys Club and rugby Sevens. Roy was always the perfect gentleman who had a very focused approach, which made him a leader, and a very respected President who touched the lives of so many. in so many areas of life.
His distinctive voice was always a pleasure to hear at the Sevens.
I feel I am privileged have been able to share time (the most precious gift ) with Roy over a lifetime. I am one of the hundreds of people who will miss you as witnessed at your funeral today.
    Cllr Clive Williams MBE
