PENARTH’S SIR BRYN TERFEL RECEIVES HIS KNIGHTHOOD AT THE PALACE

The Queen performs the official investiture at which Sir Bryn Terfel of Penarth became a knight of the realm

Penarth resident Sir Bryn Terfel  has received the knighthood which was awarded to him in the New Year’s Honours list, in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The formal investiture  – known as “the accolade” – was carried out by the Queen who touched – or “dubbed”  – Sir Bryn on both shoulders with her ceremonial sword, thus creating him a knight in his full name of Sir Bryn Terfel Jones.

Afterwards Sir Bryn, who has often performed operatic arias at the Palace, described the experience as a “surreal’ moment”. He started singing on stage at the age of four – competing in eisteddfod competitions in his native North Wales and in 1999  won the Lieder Prize at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and joined Welsh National Opera.

Since then he has enjoyed a glittering international career and also a reputation for supporting charities and good causes in Wales and around the world .
