JUST WHAT WE ALWAYS WANTED – A PUBLIC FOUNTAIN ON THE SEA-FRONT

“Thar she blows!”: An out-of-control fire hydrant shot water 50 feet into the air on Penarth Esplanade (from YouTube video by Lewys Cousins with acknowledgements to Kevin O’Sullivan)

There been some  embarrassment for painting contractors  working on what’s apparently a fire-hydrant in the roadway just north of Penarth Pier Pavilion.

The contractors are repainting the green and white railings on the pier and the Esplanade. One PDN source says they were re-filling a water bowser from the fire hydrant when the pressure in the pipework took everyone by surprise .

Valiant efforts were made to control the fountain of spray – but at the expense of a thorough soaking for those closest to the action.

Visitors  quite liked the look of Penarth’s newest water feature whilst, for life-long residents, it brought back memories of that old – 1960s vintage – children’s paddling pool, long since alas, filled-in.

Eventually even the plucky but drenched guy in the hi-viz jacket eventually has no option but abandon his attempts to tame the gusher and retire to a safe distance – to join his colleagues who’d been just standing there …watching the fun.
