The ten councillors whose contact telephone numbers are not listed on Penarth Town Council website.

Ten  members of the  Labour-controlled Penarth Town Council appear to  be withholding their  telephone numbers from local residents who may want to get in touch with them.

The entire 16-member Town Council was elected in May this year but the contact telephone numbers of only  6 members are being displayed on the council’s own website – although, before the elections, ALL councillors’ phone numbers were available on the site.

It’s not known whether the phone numbers of the 10 incommunicado councillors are have been left off the council website because of an oversight by council officers or because of the specific instructions of the 10 councillors themselves

Cllr Ben Gray is a “twin-hatted” councillor who is also a member of the Vale of Glamorgan Council. The Vale Council gives his full contact details and those of all other councillors’  on its website – including home addresses. Penarth Town Council – for some yet to be explained reason – does not.

There is little point in so-called “twin-hatted”councillors who are also members of the Vale of Glamorgan Council attempting to withhold their personal phone numbers on the Penarth Town Council site  because ALL Vale councillors’ home or personal phone numbers are all openly displayed on the Vale of Glamorgan Council  website .

The councillors who are now “incommunicado” –   as far as the Penarth Town Council website is concerned –  are :-

  • Cllr Rhiannon Birch (Labour Cornerswell)  – (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED  on Penarth Town Council website but is revealed on Vale Council website as 07720 063539)
  • Cllr Laura Rochefort (Labour Cornerswell) (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )
  • Cllr Ben Gray (Conservative Plymouth Ward)- ((NUMBER  NOT DECLARED on Penarth Town Council website but is revealed on Vale Council website as 07701 372544)
  • Cllr Kathryn McCaffer (Conservative Plymouth Ward) – ((NUMBER  NOT DECLARED  on Penarth Town Council website but is revealed on Vale Council website as 07701 372545)
  • Cllr Angela Thomas (Labour Plymouth Ward) (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )
  • Cllr Martin Turner (Conservative Plymouth Ward) (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )
  • Cllr Gary Allman (Conservative St Augustines)  (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )
  • Cllr Yvonne Murphy (Labour St Augustines) (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )
  • Cllr Ellie Evans (Labour Stanwell Ward) (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )
  • Cllr Jon Luxton (Labour Stanwell Ward)   (NUMBER  NOT DECLARED )

Those Penarth councillors whose personal phone numbers DO appear on the Penarth Town Council website are as follows :-

  • Cllr Ian Buckley (Labour Cornerswell) 07968154892
  • Cllr Ken Lloyd (Conservative Cornerswell)  – who is Mayor of Penarth 02920 710011
  • Cllr Mike Cuddy (Labour St Augustines) who is Leader of the Council   029 20702742
  • Cllr Liz Fahy (Labour St Augustines) 07932047323
  • Cllr Nigel Humphrey (Labour St Augustines) 07393121700
  • Cllr Mark Wilson (Labour Stanwell)  07908143412

The whole reason for having councillors’ phone numbers freely-available is to enable local residents to contact them easily . Many members of the public either don’t use emails or  find that  some councillors don’t respond to emails .

Having councillors prepared to take phone calls also saves constituents from the need to  traipse all the way to the Penarth Council HQ at West House on Stanwell Road for one of the Labour Party’s so-called “surgeries” on a Saturday morning.

One Penarth resident told PDN “If councillors don’t want to talk to members of the public on the phone, why on earth did they stand for election?”

  1. AK says:

Penarth Town Council and its officers have developed an overblown sense of their own importance.

It is possible to get rid of non statutory layers of local government bureaucracy if enough people vote for it.

I may start a campaign soon.

  2. Anne Greagsby says:

So true! I am waiting for a reply to my email from VoG Cllr Sivagnanam since Aug, a month ago. When I spotted her at the food fair I asked why and she said her VoG email doesn’t function. Labour Cllrs clearly don’t want to engage with the public/’customers’. Secret committees, bans on constituents, no surgeries advertised but you can take pot luck at Westhouse and never get to see your ward councillor. Why did these people stand for election if they don’t want to engage with their constituents?

  3. Windex says:

I don’t blame them! Who would want to give you grumpy lot the ability to phone them up at any time of day or night to moan about benches?

  4. Chris David says:

    Oh Hi Councillor Windex

  5. Anne Greagsby says:

Is being grumpy a new crime to add to Penaarth Town Council list? They must be the most fragile bunch of Cllrs ever!

  6. Considering the amount of abuse that these political people get from those who have have little idea how to behave I can see no reason to criticise their decisions not to publicise their telephone numbers, particularly if they have children.

    • Kenneth says:

Well, its part and parcel of a councillor’s role. Don’t want to have contact/dialogue with the public? Then don’t become a councillor.

  7. Chris David says:

Then they’re not suitable for the post. And a lot of the abuse is because of the outrageous (little idea how to) behaviour of some of the councillors- oh and clerk.

    • Mary Thomas says:

You really haven’t a clue, have you? There is no excuse for abuse in any circumstances. Apart from the offence it may cause it is unproductive. I guess you’re about to prove my point.

  8. Chris David says:

So M Thomas, you’re suggesting then councillors should not engage with the public? At least by telephone? Its either yes or no- they cant pre filter telephone calls. Sorry but it may be you that lacks a few clues! Oh and there’s an irony to your “offence” defence ha.

    • Mary Thomas says:

As usual, you miss the point. You acknowledge, in your earlier comment, that Penarth councillors are subject to abuse yet you seek to defend it on the grounds that it is somehow deserved. It is indefensible and should not be tolerated. Whatever you think of the Penarth councillors they have put themselves forward for election and public scrutiny for no financial reward. To seek to win an argument by harassment and abuse displays a weakness of character. Put up or shut up.

  9. Chris David says:

There’s a reoccurring theme here of a minority of unintelligent people that hurl abuse but fail to see the irony of perceived “abuse” aimed back and they’re retaliation with same. This is the put up “Its either yes or no- they cant pre filter telephone calls” I’m quite sure the logic totally escapes you- so I’ll (try) and shut up as its impossible to debate with an IQ of sub 80. Try reading and understanding what’s written- or as your husband says “shut up and listen” 🙂

    • Mary Thomas says:

Wow, that’s gobbledygook even by your standards. As I said, I guessed you would prove my point. How depressingly tedious.
