Stephen Doughty backed t Carolyn Harris (Labour MP for Swansea East) to become Welsh Labour’s first Deputy Leader. She was elected to that role in April. Now she’s under pressure to resign

The Swansea Labour MP Carolyn Harris – who was personally endorsed for election as Welsh Labour’s deputy leader by Penarth Labour MP Stephen Doughty is now under pressure to resign from her frontbench role in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet.

Mrs Harris is Labour’s shadow “equalities minister” – and is supposed to stand up for sexual  minorities such as Lesbians Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered people.

Jenny Rathbone Labour AM for Cardiff Central has called on Carolyn Harris to quit

Now a Labour Assembly Member Jenny Rathbone has called for Mrs Harris to stand down to clear her name after a Cardiff Crown Court trial heard that Mrs Harris had applied the derogatory term “dyke” to her former office manager – who is gay.

The court had also heard Mrs Harris deny having assaulted her office manager, Jenny Lee Clarke and pulling chunks out of her hair.

Mrs Harris had initiated a fraud case against Jenny Clarke – but Mrs Clarke was cleared of all charges .

A senior Labour left-wing activist Jon Lansman has called on  Jeremy Corbyn to suspend  Mrs Harris.

Meanwhile Welsh Government minister Hannah Blythyn has said she is “disappointed and saddened”  at the alleged homophic language used by Mrs Harris – who was narrowly elected Welsh Labour’s Deputy Leader in April .

Stephen Doughty (Labour MP for Cardiff South and Penarth) as he appeared in his video endorsement for Carolyn Harris as Welsh Labour Party Deputy Leader

Stephen Doughty the Labour MP for Cardiff South and Penarth – who is himself gay – had enthusiastically endorsed the election of Carolyn Harris as Welsh Labour Deputy Leader.

Some in the Labour Party are now questioning his judgement. Doughty has yet to comment on the latest developments

Welsh Labour Leader Carwyn Jones who himself had to field tough questions over former Minister Carl Sargeant’s suicide, is now facing demands for his Deputy Labour Leader to  resign

It’s reported that Wales’ First Minister Carwyn Jones – who is due to retire shortly –  has “full confidence” in Mrs Harris as Welsh Labour’s Deputy Leader but as yet has not made any official statement.

Labour AM Jenny Rathbone – calling for Mrs Harris to resign as Welsh Labour’s Deputy Leader – said “There’s a clearly a question mark as to whether it is appropriate for Mrs Harris to continue“. Ms Rathbone said “had all these issues been known about before the election I think it would have affected the number of people who put in their votes for Mrs Harris” .

Jon Lansman, chairman of “Momentum” and a member of Labour’s ruling body the National Executive Committee, said: “I don’t believe that Carolyn Harris can continue as a frontbench spokesperson on equalities when she has been accused in open court with supportive evidence of her former MP and then employer of homophobic abuse. “I think she needs to be removed from her current role as equalities spokesperson

Four other Labour AM’s have also now backed calls for Mrs Harris to be fired

  1. Racist and Homophobic Mark (aka Mark Foster) says:

What the UK clearly needs to do as its first step back to its former greatness is to ban homosexuals from holding public office. It could be a world leader in this.

I hate those Labour – Nationalists they do not understand.

  2. It the real world she would be sacked for gross misconduct and bringing the organisation she works for into disrepute. These offences are serious enough to warrant immediate dismissal rather than a warning. However she’s a politician so she’s be unlucky to get more than a slap on the wrist.

She should do the honourable thing and resign and find an occupation where she can do no. harm. I understand we’re short of people for harvesting this season which I would think is harmless enough.

  3. Chris David says:

There will be more to this than reported. You can bet years of “behaviours” have been swept under the carpet and the Labour louts have suppressed all reports and banned members from discussing what’s gone on. Just like in the Sargeant case and suppression. Wales is run by a dictatorship. Come on Labour persons, defend Doughty and Harris- or keep quiet more like as in when challenged to support the suppression of the publicly owned Sargeant report.

    • David Ashton says:

You forgot to mention Alun Michael, Carwyn Jones, Vaughan Gething, Lis Burnett, Penarth Town Council, Uncle Tom Cobley. I’m sure you’ll soon correct the oversight.

  4. David Day says:

None of them looks very well physically. Mr Jones looks about to burst into a thousand fragments. The others … too well upholstered. I do hope it is not the result of the strains and stresses of high office.

  5. Scootergirl says:

Maybe it’s also time for Doherty to go, for his lack of judgement

  6. Lesley Monger says:

Get rid of them both I say!

  7. Peter Church says:

Does Labour actual like any minority?

  8. Fishhenge says:

Wow, congratulations PDN on cornering the market in terrible stock photos of Labour Party members. Red T shirt, red tent, red lipstick, red glasses, head cocked over to one side and gob open. I thought the oft used photo of our beloved democratically elected ‘mayor’ was the best ever, but the one above takes the biscuit!
