The NPA South Wales police helicopter searching off Penarth Head at mid-day today

A multi-agency search was triggered at lunchtime today following reports that a potentially vulnerable person  in dark clothing  had been spotted on the Penarth shoreline.

A police helicopter with heat detecting equipment carried out several overflights of the shore – apparently without result .

The Penarth lifeboat Spirit of Penarth II – after combing the shoreline off Lavernock Point dropped off a crew member at Penarth Pier

Penarth’s D class lifeboat Spirit of Penarth II was launched to search the coast from  Lavernock Point northward to Cardiff Bay .

Beneath the piling of Penarth Pier an RNLI crew member liaises with the Penarth Coastguard Rescue Officers who were combing the shore.

It was low tide when the lifeboat reached Penarth Pier . An RNLI  crew member waded ashore to liaise with Penarth coastguard officers who were combing  the beach and examining the area underneath the pilings.

The search was stood down at 13:22  when the missing person – an elderly man – was found safe and well at his home.
