A multi-agency search was triggered at lunchtime today following reports that a potentially vulnerable person in dark clothing had been spotted on the Penarth shoreline.
A police helicopter with heat detecting equipment carried out several overflights of the shore – apparently without result .
Penarth’s D class lifeboat Spirit of Penarth II was launched to search the coast from Lavernock Point northward to Cardiff Bay .
It was low tide when the lifeboat reached Penarth Pier . An RNLI crew member waded ashore to liaise with Penarth coastguard officers who were combing the beach and examining the area underneath the pilings.
The search was stood down at 13:22 when the missing person – an elderly man – was found safe and well at his home.
