Cardiff Crown Court –

Jonathan Drakeford (31)  – the son of Welsh Labour leadership contender Mark Drakeford – has been jailed for 8 years and 8 months for a  “sustained” rape,  and for committing actual bodily harm.

The court was told Jonathan Drakeford has a low IQ and had been assessed as being “autistic”.

Jonathan Drakeford is the son of Welsh Labour Government Minister Mark Drakeford.

Jonathan Drakeford, who lives in Cardiff , had earlier admitted to a child sexual offence after he communicated on Facebook with a girl whom he thought was aged 15. Cardiff Crown Court heard the rape was committed as a “punishment”.

The rape – described as a violent, prolonged ordeal –  was committed in November 2016. The court was told it had left the victim  mentally and emotionally affected . In a statement to the court she said “The effect this rape has had on my life is huge – emotionally, mentally and physically. Since the rape, I have shut myself off emotionally and mentally. It has caused me a lot of stress, including an unborn child. I don’t want to be touched by anyone, including my partner.”

Jonathan Drakeford has been added to the sex offenders’ register for life

Jonathan Drakeford’s father is Welsh Labour Government Finance Minister Mark Drakeford – who was a probation officer before entering politics. So far he is still in the running for the Welsh Labour Leadership and – if elected – would automatically become First Minister of Wales.

Jonathan Drakeford’s father Mark Drakeford, who is Finance Minister in the Welsh Labour Government ,is currently vying with Penarth AM Vaughan Gething to become Welsh Labour Leader.

Mark Drakeford has said  “This has been a distressing period for our family. Our thoughts are with all those caught up in it, especially the victim.” He  says he will not be adding anything to that statement .

Mark Drakeford has also described the case as a personal and private matter”.

  1. Peter Church says:

Whether past or present, First Ministers seem to be constantly in the headlines for the wrong reason.

    • Peter King says:

Mark Drakeford, who may or may not become First Minister, is not in the headlines for the wrong, or any other, reasons. His son, who is an adult, is in the headlines. The “sins of the fathers” works both ways.

      • Peter Church says:

Perhaps you should let most of the news editors know that Mark Drakeford is not in the headlines, because he is mentioned in every story about his Son’s Rape conviction of a 15 year old girl.
It seems strange that we blame the parents for poor upbringing of their kids, but once they are an adult their responsibility is over.
Like it or not someone who is running for the top job in Wales should have a spotlight cast on events such as this.
If you do an enhanced CRB check then quiet rightly they want details and convictions of you immediate family members.
I’m sure the security services now wish that Mark Drakeford doesn’t become FM for very obvious reasons, which I shan’t spell out.

  2. Jack Cohen says:

“This has been a distressing period for our family. Our thoughts are with all those caught up in it, especially the victim.”

What a strange statement to make, does some of his thoughts then extend to his son as well?

Surely the Victim should be his only concern, not especially the victim, it does sound like he upset this might look badly on himself.

  3. Nincompoop says:

It’s not his fault that his son did this.
