South Wales Police have confirmed today that they are investigating an allegation of a “serious sexual assault” in Penarth on Saturday night October 6th.

Rumours of the alleged incident  began circulating on some social media over the weekend.

Today police appeared to be carrying out investigations (which may or may not be linked to the incident)  around the  Caversham Park  private housing estate near at the roundabout at the end of Dinas Road, Penarth.

A  footpath from the roundabout leads through trees to an area of wooded public access grassland adjacent to the Caversham Park housing estate .

One unconfirmed report says the alleged sexual assault may have happened in this popular area of open countryside which is reached is reached via a wooden access gate . There are also other footpaths from the housing estate leading into this area of open countryside

The wooden gate which opens onto an area of grassland and trees accessible  to the public which can be reached by several local footpaths

Some reports said the alleged victim is thought to be a 17-year-old girl – but that has not been confirmed .  Other sources said the crime being investigated as a case of rape – but again this is yet to be clarified

Police say the victim of the alleged serious sexual assault is currently being supported by specially-trained officers.
