  1. Chris Williamson says:

Food ratings are not just based on cleanliness and food prep and storage, they are also assessed on paperwork systems as well. This is included in the overall rating.

    • Lord of the Bay says:

That’s right, to get 4 or 5 stars requires a ton of paperwork – almost everything has to be logged or recorded, and for some small businesses this can become onerous, especially if food is a sideline rather than their core business. I’m quite happy to eat anywhere that has 3 stars or upwards as they will all be clean and hygienic. Any business that was so bad as to be hazardous would be told to close straight away, do a deep clean, and then be reassessed before being allowed to trade again.

      • Jp says:

Why is logging raw foodstuffs an I erhdon’t we rather than something that should definitely be done?

    • Jp says:

The paperwork records when foodstuffs arrive, their condition, their safe storage, hygienic preparation and cleaning up, safe disposal and display (including allergies info) until sale ….Thank goodness these things are being assessed!!

    • Helpful Penarthian says:

… also assessed on confidence in management, so the report also ensures that management have placed procedures have been put in place and being adhered to.

      – Having said that EHO officers will tell you that they are happy to eat in an eststablishment with a 3 plus rating.

      – Don’t be surprised – the rating is not a sign of quality of food being served, so an establishment serving the cheapest ingredients can also be awarded a 5 star. It very subjective whether the food is up to the quality you expected.

      – Be aware the rating is only a snap shot of when the inspection takes place. Hygiene standards may be lax the following day.

  2. snoggerdog says:

    well done the P.D.N.

  3. Lesley says:

Stories like this are so damaging for small businesses like those mentioned on here. It’s no way all about cleanliness

  4. Peter Church says:

Pier 64 seems to be always in the lower half of the rankings!
Just goes to show cost does not always mean a clean kitchen.

  5. Harry Parfitt says:

Penarth Labour Club 5*, Penarth Conservative Club 3*. Tsssssk, those pesky Tories lagging behind again.

    • Frank Evans says:

Does the labour club sell food or is it just brown ale and pork scratching washed down with regret on not succeeding in life.😥
I know the conservative club does do food.

Harry could you send me the labour clubs menu if you have ever been.

  6. Jp says:

Very useful to know – no, not good enough to say it’s all about paperwork or other things, many businesses have embraced safe food, the others are overdue. If you are ha doing raw food and think that it’s safe storage and handling is ‘a burden’ or ‘an overhead’ you may not be in the right job, and to be blunt, I’d rather buy food from someone who does.

  7. Lynda Murphy says:

Congratulations to Stacey and the team at the Merrie Harrier

  8. Kevin Mahoney says:

There are deficiencies in how these ratings are arrived at. I’ve seen the most spotless of kitchens get a low rating because of staff training and paperwork deficiencies and these clearly are vitally important in regards to out of date food and how these items are stored etc and quite rightly make up a part of ratings and oversight by the local authority.

I would like to see each premises perhaps have two ratings on their stickers one for cleanliness of kitchen, storage areas and general hygiene and one for how the local authority rate the attention to staff food handling training and logging of food stock rotation and storage etc.

  9. HONES says:

Not surprised by the Vale Sports Arena –

  10. Andrew Worsley says:

There is a fish and chip shop in Penarth that has for years displayed posters on its walls showing different times when it was awarded some sort of hygiene certificate. When I and im sure others went into this place these posters were displayed as if they reffered to the quality of the food not cleanliness. So one initially thought they had got praise and recognition for their high quality cooking etc , which was and is not the case at all.

  11. Chris & Co says:

As a regular at Busy Teapot have always felt it deserved it’s 5 rating, and cannot see any reason why it had dropped. Great homemade food, scrupulously clean and hosts who cannot be bettered. Now it also has a lovely new ladies loo. Don’t know about the paperwork but I would give it a 5 plus.

  12. Andrew Worsley says:

The Busy Teapot is vastly underated for its food and its friendliness to customers , other places in Penarth like Wetherspoons could learn a lot from them, how to cook food how to serve it and how to make customers feel welcome and appreciated .

  13. Afsfhgg says:

    It all bullshit
